You Are Not Alone
Struggling with a previous abortion decision is possible, and your feelings are valid. Abortion is a serious medical procedure with the potential for physical and emotional consequences.
Many women, and some men, who have been part of an abortion decision experience various levels of trauma. Don’t struggle silently. We are here for you.
What the Science Says
Women rarely share their abortion experience. The fear of judgment keeps them silent, but studies prove that some women do struggle emotionally after an abortion.
One study comparing abortion with potential mental health complications concluded the following:
- Women who have experienced an abortion are consistently associated with higher rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.
- The abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
- There are risk factors, such as pre-existing mental illness, that identify women at greatest risk of mental health problems after an abortion.
Risk factors such as pressure from someone else to abort, low self-esteem, a history of prior abortions, and the perceived need for secrecy can add to the struggle.
Symptoms vary, but can include:
- Guilt
- A sense of loss
- Depression or feeling numb
- Anxiety
- Substance abuse
- Suicidal thoughts
You may even be experiencing Post Abortion Syndrome (PAS), which can be an abortion-specific post-traumatic stress disorder.
